Peppermint—good for digestion and the respiratory tract
Peppermint has always been known as a useful plant. In horses and small animals, peppermint is used to treat flatulence and cramp-like digestive problems, as well as to clear the airways.

In the wild, it grows up to 90 centimeters tall and sprouts square stems. The leaves of peppermint are coarsely serrated at the edges and release an aromatic scent when crushed.
The main growing areas are located in large parts of Europe and America.

The ingredients in peppermint have the following effects:
- deflating
- antispasmodic
- digestive
- cholagogue
- expectorant
The essential oil in peppermint leaves stimulates digestion in animals and causes more bile acids to be dissolved. Peppermint oil also relaxes the muscles
of the intestinal wall. This alleviates flatulence and cramp-like digestive disorders.
Peppermint has also proven effective for horses with respiratory problems. The peppermint oil it contains helps to loosen stuck mucus in the bronchi
and also promotes its removal.

The active ingredients in peppermint are found in the leaves. These are rich in essential oils, flavonoids, and Lamiaceae tannins.

The positive effect of peppermint can be further enhanced by combining it with other herbs. Adding caraway and sage is particularly beneficial for
digestive problems. Anise and fennel, on the other hand,support the effectof peppermint in treating bronchial problems.
PEPPERMINT – FEEDING RECOMMENDATION
Horse:
20 – 40 g per adult horse per day
Guinea pigs, rabbits, and similar pets:
Mix 1–2 teaspoons per animal into the hay daily.
